Creepy Creative Commons Collage

Friday, July 24th, 2009

I’ve had a large archive of army medical photos and images waiting around for me to do something with for some months now and they have, at last, got their wish. This is the first of an intended series of collages.

All the source images (bar one, from a postcard I found yesterday, which was the catalyst of me getting my arse in gear) are from the “unofficial home for public domain photographs from the National Museum of Health & Medicine” here on Flickr. [There are a fair few disturbing ones, so beware. It is army medical images after all.] Which is a fantastic resource for unusual images and CC licensed to boot.

Anyone know of any similar repositories of intriguing/unusual/freaky/old CC images?

Typeface.

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

What once was a devil machine for watchin yer stories is now a handy writing device (as long as you only want each letter once, mind you).

I love to break things, by the way. Although it is slightly at odds with my odd reverence of old/obsolete technology.

Triptych.

Couldn’t sleep the other night and turning things over in my head led to turning photos over and, ultimately, after getting some shuteye, this piece:

The photo is one I took with a disposable camera which I chose because reflected alleys and paths always look amazing [do I smell a theme to be created here?] and I love the placement and shape of the trees rising in the background.

Painting Again.

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Started a brand new sketchbook, been working on the first two pages over the past days. Having done my first bit of painting in months a few days ago I chose to make the first marks in acrylic:

I used a photograph I found in a junkshop as my source material, the man seems familiar, I’m sure it’s a case of the era being similar to old family photographs I’ve seen. I can’t put my finger on what he’s thinking though, hence the empty bubble. I’m sure it’ll come though.

Any thoughts on what it could be?

Disposable ain’t a bad thing.

Been looking through a load of photos I shot with a £1 disposable camera a while ago. I’m really fond of the grainy nature of the low light ones and the way the film has dealt with sunlight.

This is one of my favourite, taken in the allotments behind my parent’s house. The colours really suit the whole feel of allotments. I love buying one of these cameras and shooting it off in a day, it lends a spontaneity to photography as well a beautiful lo-fi feel.

Having been obsessed with the tiles in Lisbon when I went there earlier this year (for OFFF) I finally got round to recreating one of the patterns today. It also gave me a chance to lino print again which is something I haven’t done since I was 14.

The intention here is to create a series of the different patterns I saw, with enough print-tiles to be able to use them as repeating backgrounds in a series of paintings. I shall keep you posted.

Blood.

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Went and had a jolly pint of blood removed today, for the NHS.  It was only a short train ride away but, as always, the mind wanders.

Oh yeah, and I fainted, again. According to the nice, faintly recognisable nurse, if I do it again they’ll ban me. How hardcore is that?!! Banned from blood donation. Like a really socially conscious thug…

Who faints.
